Hanging lights 'George' from WTC towers

08/11/2024

Back in 2019, our team salvaged hundreds of ceiling downlights by RAAK from the former World Trade Center I & II towers in Brussels. With over 260 left in our inventory, we decided they could use a little help and transformed them into new hanging lights. The aluminum cylinders were stripped of their original paint and then powder-coated with a satin finish in a specialized workshop. Four different colors are available: mustard yellow, light ivory, electric blue and blood orange.

Completed between 1972 and 1976, the WTC towers I and II were designed by a consortium led by Groupe Structures, as part of the then envisioned ‘Manhattan Plan’ for Brussels. The recent demolition-reconstruction of these towers has been questionably branded by its authors as a circular renovation, despite being one of the largest demolitions Brussels has seen in recent years (~100,000 tons, or about 10% of the region's annual building waste production).
