Materials from the former convent in the Ronsaardbekestraat in Bruges
The former convent in the Ronsaardbekestraat in Bruges is currently being transformed by the non-profit organisation Oranje vzw into a 12-unit inclusive cohousing. It will accomodate people with special needs, for example due to age or a disability, as well as people who don't need such support. In contrast to the classic idea of care institutions, the focus is on what residents can do for each other.
Originally designed in 1932 by architects Joseph and Luc Viérin, the convent features many refined building materials and finishes. While the building envelope is preserved, the interiors are undergoing a major transformation, releasing wooden doors, porcelain sinks and some 400 square metres of exquisitely detailed ceramic tiles in a variety of patterns.
The commissioner Oranje vzw and the designers of Net architectuur asked Rotor DC to salvage these materials. Nice to mention: some of the tiles we reclaimed and cleaned from their mortar have been returned to the renovation site to be reinstalled as flooring in the new project. We look forward to seeing the result!
