Project : Propa(ganda), Ghent, 2024.
The Ghent City Architect and Stand Van Zaken explored how the former Propaganda Centre on Woodrow Wilsonplein could become a venue for debate on the city’s future. In this showcase, we collaborated on a new kind of space. Young people were invited to help create a number of artistic interventions to breathe new life into this symbolically significant residual space.
The project offers a critical perspective on conventional design processes within the disciplines of architecture and design, and questions what defines a democratic public space, how temporary use takes shape, how sustainability is approached, and how young people are involved in urban development.
"The project is located within the EGW building in Ghent. This space, once dedicated to electricity and gas, later became a library. After the library was relocated, the building remained empty until now. Bouwmeester Ghent aimed to reactivate the space and invited us to develop a venue for debate. In response, we designed and installed a wall, a stage, seating, and acoustic solutions, creating an atrium for gatherings.
As the building is protected, all constructions are standalone and mechanically installed, without altering the existing structure. Cinder blocks remain untouched and are secured with threaded rods, allowing for easy relocation when needed. Although conceived as a temporary intervention, the duration remains uncertain. With each mandate, a new user will take over the space, and the City of Ghent is currently seeking the next occupant.
The atrium now serves as a meeting point, hosting lectures and discussions. A central table fosters engagement, and the entrance accommodates two wheelchairs, ensuring inclusivity within the circle."
