Wow! We’re so happy to have received the tiles from Agnès Emery’s workshop in her Brussels house, where she practised her own tile-handpainting technique!
“I paint the tiles by hand alone, as it’s [...] like a kind of calligraphy whose writing is identifiable and unique. It’s also a rather adventurous cuisine because the 800°C heat exposure very often causes reactions between the tile’s glaze and that of my brush, making certain colour combinations impossible.”
@agnes.emery is an artist, designer and entrepreneur who defies categorisation. Trained as an architect, her work has been significantly influenced by her travels in search of artisanal crafts on the verge of disappearing around the world. She founded Emery&Cie, a Belgian brand specialising in Zellige mosaic tilework and interior and decoration materials, which operated between 1993 and 2024. The company was a household name among many interior designers.
