Materials from Opwijk monastery
Just in: monumental doors and cabinets from the monastery of Opwijk! Built in several phases between 1904 and 1947, the building subtly combines the techniques and tastes of five successive decades. When we were invited to visit, we were afraid of a major reconversion project that would involve the removal of all the interiors, floors and everything else. Nothing of that: the monastery is still run by the same sister congregation as it has been since the beginning, and the architectural project consists of a series of targeted interventions. One wing of the building will house assisted living units, and the removal of the doors is a matter of fire code compliance.
Thanks to the design collective ACME, the building company Beckaert and the congregation of the Sisters of St. Vincentius for the nice collaboration!
