Tables from the Banque Brussels Lambert building's cafeteria by Christophe Gevers

We had the privilege of recovering the tables from the cafeteria of the former headquarters of the 'Banque Bruxelles Lambert' in Etterbeek (Brussels). This cafeteria was designed by Christophe Gevers between 1975 and 1976. It is one of the designer's most important commissions in the 1970s, after the interior design of 'Passage 44' and just before his work for the Générale de Banque headquarters (from which we salvaged strikingly similar tables 10 years ago!).  We visited the archives of Christophe Gevers, hosted by the Design Museum Brussels. Our aim? To find all the information we could about the former cafeteria of the Banque Bruxelles Lambert headquarters in Etterbeek. After unpacking several rolls of plans, technical details, sketches and many other wonders, we found it: the 1975 drawing of the exact tables we had recovered, with their distinctive details in solid oak!

The drawings confirmed that the table tops were originally divided by a central stainless steel U-profile (for the salt and pepper shakers!). At some point in recent decades, the central profile was removed and the tabletop replaced by a single, full-width panel. The rest of the components appear to match the drawing - right down to the shape of the screws!

The interiors of the massive modernist complex have been extensively renovated over the last few decades, including the cafeteria designed by Christophe Gevers. The tables remained in use and were visibly restored and adapted. Unfortunately, the rest of the cafeteria's interior, including its unusual ceilings, has long since disappeared. The building was purchased by the American Embassy in 2022.

The tables are safely stored in our warehouse!
